Ninth State Boxing Club
PHILOSOPHY
Our main goal at Ninth State Boxing Club is for people to enjoy Boxing as a sport. To do that, we practice amature style boxing that focuses on developing technique, improving physical fitness, and learning proper scoring & defense. Furthermore, members of Ninth State Boxing Club are just that, members of a club, and are encouraged to work with and learn from one another. This results in a positive, safe, and encouraging environment for everyone to participate in this unmatched sport of exhilaration and invigoration.
TYPES OF BOXERS
Workout Boxer
The Workout Boxer is a person who practices the sport of boxing as a means to an energetic and engaging workout. Workout Boxers learn all the proper techniques of punching, footwork, combinations, and how to work the various bags and train in the gym. Most Workout Boxers practice non-contact boxing and focus on the aerobic aspects of the sport. Some Workout Boxers do choose to incorporate semi-contact sparring drills into their workout routine. Workout Boxers receive one-on-one coaching twice a week.
Club Boxer
The Club Boxer is a person who chooses to practice the sport of boxing as a means of working out with an emphasis on actually applying the skills of the sport via semi-contact drills and full sparring. Club Boxers learn all the proper techniques of punching, footwork, combinations, slipping, and how to work the various bags and train in the gym. In addition, Club Boxers also learn proper defensive techniques, ring strategy, and more complex punching combinations. Club Boxers receive private coaching at least twice a week (although daily coaching is suggested) and are required to workout 3 times a week in the gym to ensure proper development of technique and stamina for sparring. All Club Boxers must eventually register with USA Boxing and purchase headgear.
Dedicated Boxer
The Dedicated Boxer is a person who is dedicated to practicing the sport of boxing as if preparing to actually compete in the sport. Along with learning all the proper techniques for punching, footwork, defense, slipping, and ring generalship, the Dedicated Boxer places special emphasis on mastering the finer techniques of the sport. Hours and hours of repetitious drill work are expected of the Dedicated Boxer, as well as a supplementary training regimen outside of the gym. Dedicated Boxers must receive private coaching daily and are required to workout at least 3 times a week (4 or more sessions strongly recommended). All Dedicated Boxers must register with USA Boxing and purchase headgear & bag gloves.
Back to TopRegistering with USA Boxing
USA Boxing Registrations begin January 1st, 2006. All Boxers interested in participating in semi-contact sparring drills or full contact sparring must register with USA Boxing. Those Boxers under the age of 35 simply need to complete the USA Boxing Application and submit it with their registration fee (about $40). Those Boxers ages 35 and over must have a physical performed by a doctor and have that doctor provide a statement of release indicating the individual is healthy and able to participate in the sport of Boxing. This statement of release must be submitted along with the USA Boxing Application and registration fee. Being a member of USA Boxing provides additional insurance as well as supports the sport of amature Boxing. In addition, registered USA Boxers may travel and workout at other gyms across the country that are also USA Boxing certified.
TRAINING
The Nature of Boxing
Although boxing appears to be a very simple activity, the fact is that an extreme amount of precision and technique goes into the sport. “The Devil is in the Details” so to say. At Ninth State Boxing Club, our philosophy is to teach you the sport while you get in shape. As a result, we begin by giving you a basic overview of the sport and start you moving and practicing boxing as soon as day one. Then, over time, we take these basic movements and begin to refine them, developing the proper skills and technique. The best part is, it’s fun and invigorating right from the start.
Interval Training
All training at Ninth State Boxing Club is done using a round clock, just as professional boxers and competing ameatures use. This is an extremely effective and beneficial method of exercise that aids in not only learning the sport but also in conditioning the body.
COACHING
All members of Ninth State Boxing Club receive one on one coaching. This way, each Boxer is encouraged and able to practice the sport and improve at his or her own pace. The number of sessions of coaching session (2 per week or everyday) is up to each Boxer to decide.
At Ninth State Boxing Club, we don’t believe in throwing an enormous amount of information at you for an entire hour and then have you come back a week later only to have forgotten most of what you learned. Instead, our philosophy is to space out coaching throughout the week so that information and techniques can be continuosly reinforced. As a result, you will receive shorter periods of private coaching (about 10 to 15 minutes) several times a week as opposed to an hour on one day and nothing the rest of the week. We find this method to be very effective for learning the sport.
The Value of Coaching
Altogether, Ninth State Boxers receive individualized coaching for 10 to 15 minutes a day or 2-4 hours a month. At other gyms, private coaching costs anywhere between $40-$85 an hour. Our private coaching comes out to about $15 an hour.
In addition, coaching is always provided via short instructions throughout a boxer’s workout. Plus, Boxers may workout anytime whether they are scheduled for private coaching or not.
Plus, all members have free use of the facilities to work out anytime, including the fitness gym!
Back to TopSigning Up For Coaching Sessions
Coaching Session sign up sheets for the current week and following week will be posted at the club. Members are asked to sign up for the hours they will be present and would like to receive a private coaching session. Walk-in coaching sessions are allowed as long as space for the hour and the coach is available.
VALUE
Is $59 to $69 a month a lot of money? It can be. However, consider all that we spend a similar amount if not more on: cell phones, cable TV, gasoline, eating out, seeing movies. Doesn’t your body deserve as much? Isn’t being physically fit and feeling good about oneself just as much a necessity to living well? We think so. Plus, you’ll most likely find that participating at Ninth State Boxing Club is as enjoyable and exciting as any movie… and a lot more rewarding.
